Aqua Team Gets Wet on Coastal Clean Up Day
On Saturday September 21st, 20 Aqua Team students removed over 50 lbs of trash, 236 items total in partnership with Lynne Scarpa, Stormwater Manager of the City of Richmond. Students were physically in the water in waders and documented all trash they found, which the City will use to meet its stormwater pollution guidelines and to create legislation for plastic bans.
Just after the trash assessment, rainwater pressure built up in the trash catchment devices installed by the city to catch Hilltop mall's trash and busted out through the manhole covers (see photo), flooding the pathways next to the creek as well as the creek itself. Students rushed to pick up bottles flowing in the water. They reported a very positive day, but were sad to know that more trash would fill up the creek. They are designing service-learning projects to educate younger students about litter.
