Interns at Richmond High School focused their attention close to home—their classrooms. By conducting a waste audit, they soon realized that most of the “trash” consisted of plastic bottles, leftover food, juice boxes, straws and sporks; all readily recyclable or compostable. This revelation inspired them to look for solutions that could help reduce waste. Lake Merritt plays a vital role in the health of our watershed and communities, and as much as we depend on it, Lake Merritt depends on us. This year, Oakland High interns have been hosting a series of litter blitzes at Lake Merritt aimed at identifying community driven solutions to litter trends. Through data collection and analysis, the interns identified cigarette butts as the most common source of litter. Now they’re working with the City of Oakland to implement solutions.
